Assisi Committee of Management

Judith Ascroft (President)

Judith Ascroft is a senior executive with expertise in international development and public health. Judith is currently an independent consultant and most recently has been Team Leader of a major DFAT initiative in Indonesia and the CEO of Nossal Institute Limited, University of Melbourne. Recognised as a leader, mentor and change manager, Judith has worked in the not for profit, public, private, and academic sectors and has enhanced her Board .and committee skills as both an Executive and Non-Executive Director. Judith has multidisciplinary and cross-cultural proficiency developed through extensive field-based work experience in the Asia, Africa and Pacific regions. Over the past decade her focus has been on: organisational leadership; governance; risk management; strategic and business planning; business development; representation; coaching; personnel management and capacity development of international teams; community empowerment; and participatory monitoring and evaluation.

Tony Britt (Vice President)

Tony is a qualified veterinary surgeon.  He works for the Victorian Department of Environment and Primary Industries in a range of fields relating to animal biosecurity, animal welfare and trade facilitation. In 2008 Tony was awarded the Public Service Medal for services to Australia’s cattle industry through the introduction of the National Livestock Identification System.

Tony is a long serving member of Assisi Aid Projects and was President of Assisi from 2008-2016.

Dione Brooks (Secretary)

Dione began working in aid and development through an Australian Volunteers International placement in 2000-2001. She was placed with Wan Smolbag Theatre in Port Vila, Vanuatu working with office staff to build capacity in the administration of grants and marketing of the group. On her return to Australia, she spent 10 years with Live & Learn, working closely with the administration and communication teams both in Melbourne and internationally. During this time, she assisted in the transfer of Assisi’s administration support from Bendigo to the Melbourne office. In more recent years she has spent time living in Canada with her family and now back in Australia, Dione continues to support Assisi as a member of the Committee of Management.

Andrew Gilchrist (Treasurer)

Andrew Gilchrist is a Director of Logan & Hall – Accountants and Advisers in Swan Hill Victoria.  He is a member of CPA Australia and has been a board member of Assisi Aid Projects Inc since 2004.  He has a Bachelor of Business (Agricultural Commerce) degree and over 20 years finance industry experience.  He is also a Board Member of Swan Hill Incorporated, a body designed to promote living, working and doing business in the Swan Hill region.

Tom Dumaresq

Tom Dumaresq is one of the founding members of Assisi Aid Projects, and our longest standing committee member. He served as President of Assisi from 2002-2008, which included the period of support following the Boxing Day Tsunami. He is famous within the organisation for calling John Faine on ABC talkback radio and raising over $200,000 for victims of the tsunami in Tamil Nadu, India.

Tom received an Order of Australia Medal in 2008, “For service to the community as a supporter of humanitarian aid projects, and through a range of roles with environmental, church, education and emergency services groups.”

Tom worked as a farmer growing tomatoes and Lucerne and grazing lambs and cattle from the time he left school until his retirement in 2014. His list of achievements is too long to detail, but he has been an active founder, member and president of numerous environmental and community groups and has won several awards for his services to the environment. Tom was a torchbearer in the Commonwealth Games Relay in 2006 and Captained the North West Mooroopna Fire Brigade for 12 years. He has travelled all across the world, including to our projects in India, Timor Leste and Cambodia.

Tom has been married for almost 50 years, and has four children and seven grandchildren.

Jayshree Mangubhai

Jayshree Mangubhai is a Senior Human Rights Adviser with the Secretariat of the Pacific Community, based in the Pacific. She has over 15 years of experience working in the human rights and development sectors in India and across South Asia, and previously held the position of Policy and Advocacy Officer – South Asia with the international development agency Christian Aid. Her expertise lies in the areas of rights-based approaches to development, gender and social inclusion programming and she has significant experience in the design and delivery of programs in developing country contexts. She holds a PhD in law with a thesis that focused on collective action by marginalised women to secure livelihood entitlements in rural Tamil Nadu, South India.

Nimarta Khuman

Nimarta has over a decade of experience working across humanitarian relief and development for both the not for profit and private sectors including Médecins Sans Frontières, Norwegian Refugee Council, The Fred Hollows Foundation, Credit Union Foundation Australia and GHD. She has held roles based at headquarters and in the field across East and South Asia, most recently as Interim CEO of Assisi Aid Projects in Melbourne and co-leading the Protection Cluster in Afghanistan.

Nimarta has a compliance background and has worked closely on accreditation and systems development. Her experience includes operations management, program development, policy, gender and social inclusion. She has worked at the community to national government level across microfinance, governance, emergency aid, health systems, women’s empowerment and protection.

Nimarta is a consultant in the sector and is currently on the Committee of Management and on the Fundraising and Projects and Strategy Sub-Committees of Assisi Aid Projects. She is also a member of the ACFID Code of Conduct Committee and redr Australia Roster.  She holds tertiary qualifications in Media and Communications, majoring in Politics and International Relations and has recently been trained in profiling coordination of internally displaced people and working in insecure environments.

Assisi staff

Executive Officer: Chloe Reynolds

Chloe joined Assisi Aid Projects as Executive Officer in 2019 and is responsible for the operational leadership and strategic management of Assisi Aid Projects, reporting to the President of the Committee of Management.   Chloe oversees the day to day operations of Assisi, including the development and delivery of Assisi’s strategic plan, country strategies and annual operational plans.

Chloe’s previous roles include Head of Humanitarian Awards and Humanitarian Operations Lead roles with Save the Children UK, where she was responsible for a portfolio of over 300 humanitarian awards.  She has also held roles with Marie Stopes International, Girlguiding UK and PriceWaterhouseCoopers.  Chloe is experienced in the design and delivery of projects promoting women’s empowerment, child rights and combatting social disadvantage, and has worked with teams in a range of development and humanitarian contexts, including India, Yemen, Bangladesh, China, Mongolia, Myanmar, Timor-Leste, Indonesia, Kenya and Tanzania.

Chloe’s skills include: senior leadership, governance, strategic planning, program design and delivery, people and stakeholder management, financial and budget management, donor relationships and reporting, new business development, capacity building and mentoring, child safeguarding, and policy and procedure development.

Program Manager: Caroline Gatenby

Caroline joined Assisi in 2019 to manage the India and Cambodia program operations. Caroline’s international experience is broad having worked in Australia, Timor-Leste, Vanuatu, Bangladesh, and the UAE. An experienced Project Consultant, Caroline has been working with NGOs, UN missions, philanthropic trusts, and foreign governments since 2008.

Caroline’s skills include:  international development; strategic and communication planning; business process improvement; corporate governance; charitable trust management; philanthropic giving; executive reporting; capacity development; editing and technical writing.

Caroline has a Bachelor of Arts with honours in Classics from the University of Melbourne, and a Master of Arts from RMIT.

Finance Manager: Indira Wijesinghe 

Indira is a member of IPA Australia. She has a Bachelor of Accountancy and Finance Management and 18 years of experience in the not-for-profit sector in Sri Lanka and Australia.

We are also supported by a number of skilled volunteers and partner organisations in our countries of operation.
