Where we help

Our projects were originally based amongst the disadvantaged villages of Tamil Nadu in Southern India. In 2009 Assisi established a strategic partnership with a like-minded organisation Live and Learn and we now have projects based in Cambodia, Timor-Leste and the Maldives.

Assisi Farm

Renovations to the Assisi Farm house and training centre have made the compound more accessible to villagers. Local farm workers also continue to develop new skills such as bee/honey and rabbit farming with the support of Assisi Farm and as rubber cultivation grows more profitable and less susceptible to pests such as monkeys, the dairy enterprise has become less of a focus at Assisi Farm.

Kanyakumari

The marketing of dried fish has become an important enterprise for a number of Self Help Groups with men’s groups traditionally managing the fishing fleets, and women’s groups selling the dried product at markets and even exporting to the Maldives. The Self Help Groups provide villagers with fishing equipment as well vital skills and training in food handling and preparation.

Ambassamudram

Assisi programs in Ambassamudrum include: raising awareness of HIV/ AIDS related issues; Self Help Groups involved in tailoring, design and manufacturing; and the support of indigenous tribal communities and their land rights.

Kancheepuram

The program in Kancheepuram has a strong youth focus whereby children are encourages to get involved in singing, dancing and theatre so as to convey educational messages to the rest of the community.

Cambodia

The project is called the 'Strengthening of Self Help Groups'.  It is located in:

  • Southern Cardamom Mountains, and
  • Tonie Sap Lake Cambodia.

Trapeang Roung Commune is located in Koh Kong province of Cambodia.  There are four villages and 521 families living in this commune.  Tonie Sap Lake Phat Sanday Commune is located in Kampong Svay District, Kampong Thom province of Cambodia.  There are five floating villages and 980 families living in the Commune area.

Timor-Leste

"Maternal and Infant Health - Reduction of Mortality" is the title of this project.  It will operate in the Districts of Baucau and Lautem - Dili, East Timor.  The primary focus of the project is helping more mothers and babies survive the hazardous transition to birth and beyond.  The project will also establish mechanisms for providing training in care of newborn infants, feeding and nutrition for young children, managing fertility and reproductive health.

Maldives
