Where we helpOur projects were originally based amongst the disadvantaged villages of Tamil Nadu in Southern India. In 2009 Assisi established a strategic partnership with a like-minded organisation Live and Learn and we now have projects based in Cambodia, Timor-Leste and the Maldives. Assisi FarmRenovations to the Assisi Farm house and training centre have made the compound more accessible to villagers. Local farm workers also continue to develop new skills such as bee/honey and rabbit farming with the support of Assisi Farm and as rubber cultivation grows more profitable and less susceptible to pests such as monkeys, the dairy enterprise has become less of a focus at Assisi Farm. KanyakumariThe marketing of dried fish has become an important enterprise for a number of Self Help Groups with men’s groups traditionally managing the fishing fleets, and women’s groups selling the dried product at markets and even exporting to the Maldives. The Self Help Groups provide villagers with fishing equipment as well vital skills and training in food handling and preparation. AmbassamudramAssisi programs in Ambassamudrum include: raising awareness of HIV/ AIDS related issues; Self Help Groups involved in tailoring, design and manufacturing; and the support of indigenous tribal communities and their land rights. KancheepuramThe program in Kancheepuram has a strong youth focus whereby children are encourages to get involved in singing, dancing and theatre so as to convey educational messages to the rest of the community.
