Self Help Groups

Self Help Groups (SHGs) are formal networks which enable members to access information and new ideas.  They also provide training and assistance in: effective SHG functioning, savings and credit, Government welfare entitlements, legal rights and also the skills required to eventually run their own businesses.

Assisi supports SHGs in southern India in districts located in Tamil Nadu. Groups are involved in enterprises such as the marketing of dried fish, rabbit farming, and tailoring, design and manufacturing.

The marketing of dried fish has become an important enterprise in Kanyakumari with the men’s groups traditionally managing the fishing fleets and the women’s groups selling the dried product at markets and even exporting to the Maldives.
